MOHAMMED’S FIRST CONVERTS
By the earliest account, written 150 years after his death, Mohammed’s first converts were his aging wife Khadijah, his slave and temporarily adopted son Zayd ibn Harithah, his daughter Fatima, his 10-year-old cousin and future son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib, and his future father-in-law Abu Bakr.
Once someone converts to Islam, they cannot leave, as Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari (Vol. 9, Bk. 84, No. 57) stated:
Mohammed said, “Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him.” (Mu’atta Imam Malik’s Hadith “break his neck”)
Shaykh ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Jibreen stated:
If your wife leaves Islam and if she does not repent then the ruling of Allah should be carried out on her, which is execution, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever changes his religion [leaves Islam], execute him.”
Muslims are not encouraged to critically examine their faith, as they could be accused of doubting and punished by death.
The University of California website has a page where one can search the Qur’an, yet it displays a:
“Warning (especially for Muslims).”
MOHAMMED’S WIVES
Mohammed’s first wife, Khadijah, financed him while he spent time meditating. She died around 620 AD.
Following her death, Mohammed had 11 to 15 wives and many concubines, consorts and slave mistresses. (Hadith al-Tabari vol. 9 p.126-127)
His wives names were: Sawda, Aisha, Umm Salama, Hafsa, Zainab (of Jahsh), Juwariya, Umm Habiba, Safia, Maymuna (of Hareth), Fatimah, Hend, Asma (of Saba), Zainab (of Khozayma), Habla, Asma (of Noman), Maria, Rayhana, Umm Sharik, Maymuna (not of Hareth), Zainab (third one), Khawla, and Duba.
Mohammed had a right to a fifth of the women received as war booty, as later did the Caliphs and Sultans.
The Qur’an made it permissible to have sexual relations with women captured in war, “women their right hands possess.” (Sura 23:5-6; 33:50,52; 4:24; 70:29-30).
His wives were obedient, as Mohammed had a particular verse in the Qur’an for them:
O Consorts of the Prophet if any of you were guilty of evident unseemly conduct, the punishment would be doubled to her, and that is easy for Allah. (Sura 33:30)
In the Hadith, Mohammed said:
Woman can be married for religion, her fortune, or her beauty. So marry one for the religion (Abu Issa al-Tarmidi, Sunan al-Tarmidi, Medina n.d., p.275, B: 4, H:1092)
Mohammed’s youngest wife was Aisha. She was 6 or 7 years old when wed and 9 when the marriage was consummated, though some say she was closer to 14.
The Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari recorded:
Narrated Aisha that the prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old. (Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 7, No. 64)
After Mohammed died, a division arose in Islam:
Sunni Muslims believe Aisha’s father, Abu Bakr, inherited Mohammed’s authority and became the first Caliph.
Shi’a Muslims believe Mohammed’s cousin and son-in-law, Ali Ibn Abi Talib, who was married to Mohammed’s daughter Fatima, was the rightful Caliph.
Part V of William J. Federer's series on the Qur'an is as educational as the the ones preceding it. Hit the link above and read the whole thing. Yet another typically frightening look into Islam and its beginnings, not to mention the horrific "prophet" Mohammed. Of the 1 billion Muslims in the world, it's been realistically estimated that 10% of them are fanatical Islamists who want little more than to see America and Israel destroyed for all time. The math is easy: 100 million Muslims in the world today are Jihadists of one flavor or another. I often imagine how we would fight them if they stopped killing each other more than they kill us. Not a happy thought. Then again, my site is not known for its joy.
